Devastated by the sudden passing of Talos, moniker of Eoin French, I needed to write a few words in his memory in order to remind myself of him and his celestial, life-time achievement every time I look back at this blog.
I was introduced to Talos by a friend, a fan of all kinds of music regardless of genres. He shared a link of ‘This is Us Colliding’ with me and told me he thought I would love it. And even though there are only a few Indie acts I can relate to, the song spoke to my heart like nothing before. Since then, I’ve played Talos’ discography multiple times for it became a place that allows me to rest and take care of myself, contemplate and feel safe. Safer than the home I grew up in. French’s music made me feel I can take my time to just exist and take it all in without the rush dictated by this day and age. The world he created through his music and visuals, to me, is a heaven made of water, earth, fire and lightning, combined with his heavenly vocals, heartfelt poetry and nostalgic soundscapes to create a realm of hopes and dreams.
French is one of those rare cases who choose (can’t think in past tense) to speak mainly through their artistry and only surface when they have something important to communicate to the world. A low-profile creator who felt gigantic thanks to the grandiose emotional baggage he was carrying. And indeed, in Greek Mythology, Talos was a bronze giant made by Hephaestus, god of blacksmithing, to protect Crete. Even unknowingly, Eoin French’s calling was to protect our peace of mind and teach us how to take our time to process this mysterious coincidence called life.
The lnstagram post that announces his death leaves me in tears every time I’m reading it as I’m trying to swallow what happened and I can only send my condolences to French’s family. No words will ever be enough to describe Talos’ contribution to music and the impact he had on our lives. May your soul find the peace you offered to ours.
